Shutting down of many jute procurement centres at Kurigram, Nilphamari and Rangpur districts of Bangladesh has led to a sharp fall in the demand for the fibre.
As a result, farmers in these districts are incurring massive losses — around Tk 100 to Tk 150 a maund.
Consider the price of finest quality tossa (golden) jute, which is selling at a mere Tk 550 to Tk 600 while the local variety is selling at Tk 400 to 440. Thus, there is hardly a difference between the best and the coarse variety of jute.
Apart from the closure of jute procurement centres due to shutting down of state-run jute mills in the area, another reason is the inability of the jute farmers to make purchase due to lack of funds or their failure to renew their licenses.
