Central Government owned National Jute Manufacturer Corporation has put up five mills for sale and the Government of West Bengal plans to buy them at a reserve price notified for the deal.
Although West Bengal Government has shown keen interest in these mills, the Union Government has not yet given any definitive response. Land available at the five mills is nearly 200 acre and the State Government aims to purchase it for the purpose of industrial development.
In another development, Nirupam Sen, Minister for Commerce and Industries, West Bengal, conveyed in a media conference about the State's desire to directly purchase the land from the farmers to create a stronger industrial base in the state. The Government proposes to lay stress on key areas that includes Kolkata, Haldia, Asansol-Durgapur, Kharagpur-Jhargram, Siliguri-Jalpaiguri, and Kalyani.
The Government increasingly relies on these core areas to make maximum utilization of the available infrastructure. This will in turn, help promote new industrial projects in developing areas.
