Jute Manufacturers Development Council (JMDC), which is engaged in promoting jute diversified products (JDP), is now focusing at new markets in the Gulf and Middle East countries as the demands from the US markets are decreasing due to global financial crisis.

Earlier, USA and the EU countries were the key markets for Indian Jute products but due to the recession, demands from these countries are falling down, which is forcing JMDC to look at new markets.

The agency is also focusing on African markets now, as packing cocoa in jute bags has been made mandatory here and it is advisable for coffee also, said the Secretary of JMDC Mr. Atri Bhattacharya.

JMDC is communicating with various malls and retail chain stores for selling JDPs in shop-in-shop formats, in this respect it has already negotiated with Pantaloons and Big Bazaar, he added.

In addition to this, the agency is also in talks with government organizations such as NDDB for using jute as carry bags.
