According to an economist, if the government extends policy support for development of the industry, jute has the potential to regain its lost glory of 'golden fibre'.
With a rise in the demand for natural fibre in the world markets, there are enormous possibilities for jute and jute items in Bangladesh, Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad, Chairman of Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation said.
As majority of the countries across the globe are exerting to alleviate the effects of climate change, they are adapting to the use of jute products for its qualities like recyclability and eco-friendliness.
Ahmad said this while addressing a seminar on 'Jute and its future'. The seminar was jointly organized by a local development organisation - Tarango, UK based charitable trust - Tradecraft Exchange and Katalyst at Dhaka's IDB auditorium.
He further said that, importance of the jute industry should not be understated, as the sector directly and indirectly provides employment to around 40 million people.
He even urged for diversification of the country's export basket through restoration of the jute sector.
Kazi Shahed Ferdous, Director of Tradecraft Exchange in Bangladesh said that, promotion of small scale sustainable agriculture and jute industry remains to be their main aim, and that Tradecraft has launched its second project aimed at revival of the entire jute value chain.
