Bangladesh agriculture minister M Abdur Razzaque recently said the country would be self-reliant in jute seed production within three years with the formulation of a road map by his ministry for that. Scientists at the Jute Research Institute in the country have developed a jute variety that is better than the Indian variety, he told a National Jute Day gathering.

Jute seed is usually produced in India in infertile land and then exported to Bangladesh.

“The government has been relentless working to make the newly innovated jute seed popular among the farmers,” he was quoted as saying by Bangladeshi media reports.

In the past 12 years, the country’s jute production nearly doubled to nearly 17 lakh tonnes, he added.
