Price of TD-5 raw jute in India may drop considerably in the first half of this jute season (July 2021 to June 2022) to reach ₹5,694.70 per quintal by December 2021. The price went up from ₹5,347.62 per quintal in January 2021 to ₹6,395.65 per quintal in March 2021, and further increased by 17.34 per cent to ₹7,504.55 per quintal in June 2021, according to Fibre2Fashion’s market analysis tool TexPro.

The major reasons for the price drop are a significant rise in plantation area, announcement of increased minimum support price (MSP) for this season and shutdown of jute mills in the second quarter of 2021. Plantation area had already increased by 1 lakh hectare in 2020-21.

Due to poor production, a total of 15 jute mills had closed in April 2021. The Indian government has already fixed the MSP at ₹4,500 per quintal for this season, which is 6.51 per cent more than the MSP of ₹4,225 per quintal in the previous season.
