Dudou, an ancient Chinese undergarment, is back in vogue again, thanks to its rapidly increasing popularity among socialites and celebrities from all around the world.

Believed to be in wide use till the introduction of brassiere in the 20th century, the diamond shaped sexy revealing attire was revived and brought into mainstream fashion by internationally famous labels like Versace and Miu Miu in 2000.

Made of luxe materials like lace, silk and cotton, the lower part of the antique lingerie piece features a triangle shaped cover to wrap the belly, and fastening laces are attached near the neck and waist to tie and accentuate the curves of feminine forms.

Dudou, which means bellyband in English, is generally adorned with patterns of traditional Chinese symbolism, such as tigers, scorpions, snakes and geckos, to ward off evil spirits as well as embroideries of lotus and mandarin ducks to symbolise love.

The rhomboidal shaped bra is believed to be invented by Yang Yuhuan, the secondary wife or concubine of an emperor from the Tang Dynasty (AD 618 – 907).
