In a fashion show under the rising cupola of Grand Palais, the influential French fashion house Christian Dior recently hosted the spring 2007 collection of designer John Galliano.

Dior and the other great brands on Paris catwalk have been in transition in the last 10 years or so and most of them have chosen successors and changed themselves to suit the changing trend.

The Dior clothes came in shades that could kindly be described as ecru and taupe but more realistically should be dubbed: cadaver, mummy or mold.

At Givenchy, designer Riccardo Tisci is in his third season. Wednesday night, he launched the spring Givenchy collection at the Tennis Club of Paris, which combined elements of everything and anything: tribalism, the mod era, the Givenchy "little black dress," mud-cloth prints, sports gear, and sailing.

The collection included collage dresses in white with circle cutouts and wide patent leather belts. There were baby doll dresses made up of thick loops of black fabric with bits of green beading woven through it in addition to a royal blue jersey romper with a patent leather belt.

The Valentino collection echoed the elegant and frothy history of the house. At the same time, it was also a current interpretation of the designer's philosophy with each garment looking perfect for the present.
