Eating disorder has become a major issue in Italy. Three million girls in Italy are suffering from eating disorders like anorexia or bulimia. This situation has alarmed the Government.
So the Government and designers of the fashion industry have joined forces to fight this problem.
The Italian Chamber of Fashion and Italy's Youth Ministry has issued this self-regulated code. The code is to be signed in Rome this week.
Ultra thin models are no more welcome on the ramp of the European fashion market and girls under the age of 16 cannot become a professional model.
Models who want to participate in the prestigious fashion shows will now have to provide a medical certificate, along with proof of age.
