New class of Punjabi fashion designers is working on Zardozi embroidery, which is preferred by Punjabis residing abroad. Sophisticated patterns in gold and silver, with embellishments of gems and pearls are back in fashion.
Growing demand for traditional clothing amongst NRI Punjabis is proving to be a big advantage for many of Chandigarh's designers.
Zardozi suits and lehengas designed by Meetu Kohli have influenced overseas markets. NRIs are also placing orders regularly for trousseaus designed by newcomers Pretty Sandhu and her daughter Kiran.
With accessories like bindis, bangles and mehendi gaining popularity abroad due to endorsement by Gwen Stepani, Madonna and other celebrities, Indian fashion has started to go global.
