Mauricio Martinez says I purchase a guayabera shirt and I was inspired by the designer that I wanted to write a piece on how the designer is making a awesome fashion statement in the Latino Community. The origins of the Guayabera are disputed by many, it is a small wonder; after all, this elegant, versatile, shirt jacket not only is a source of pride for many, but its classiness and versatility can not be denied.

Among the more credible versions of the history of the Guayabera is the one linked to the beautiful island of Cuba, where it is believed the original Guayaberas were brought on ships from China and the Philippines in the 1880s, there Cuban land barons adopted it and added a very unique Caribbean-Latino style, that has resulted in the classic Guayabera, squared, with four pockets, and the typical, simple yet rich detail.

The name Guayabera is also widely disputed; some believe it was originally named for yayaberos while others believe it comes from the name of the fruit Guayaba. Whatever the origins, one can not deny that the Guayabera has come to represent simplicity, yet absolute elegance.

Through the years, the Guayabera has become the shirt of choice for Latin American dignitaries and it has also come to be known as the Mexican wedding shirt. It is a small wonder, since its arrival in the coast of Veracruz, Mexican men have adopted this stylish and versatile shirt as they perfected the DanzÓn on the dance floors of Veracruz, and at weddings, festivals and official government events as well as something to wear for a leisurely stroll on a coastal towns.
