Due to fashion runways being dominated by women's designer wear, men's wear has always been considered as second both in India and abroad.
Designer Priyadarshini Rao opines that while women give importance to designer labels, men restrict their buying to small brands. As far as urban areas are concerned, designers shy away from working on men's clothing because only ladies' dresses are looked upon as fashionable.
Suneet Varma, who designed his first men's label for Tuscan Verve two years back, believes that menswear is much ahead in terms of sales and revenue despite being less popular. Menswear does not receive as much attention as it deserves owing to the fact that it is comparatively less attractive.
Sales for Calvin Klein are brought about mostly by clothing, innerwear and cologne for men, although its ads focus mainly on women's wear. Thus, fashion is not the realm of women only.
