Fashion drive corners cabbies

In a move to spruce up the image of the country's taxi drivers, the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board has passed a decree whereby untidy and poorly dressed cabby drivers will be penalized.

If they are found with shirts not tucked in or wearing shoes of the wrong colour, they could be fined up to 100-300 ringgit — which comes to roughly three days' average wages.

According to the rule, Malaysia's lowly-paid taxi drivers have to wear white shirts, dark trousers and black shoes. The idea is to urge the drivers to present a professional image.

However, many drivers have been crying hoarse at having to pay the fine. Some were even found shedding copious tears at the Board's office.
