With the spread of diabetes, patients need to be considered and their special requirements must be fulfilled.

Recognizing this, IIT Chennai and Sundaram Medical Foundation (SMF) have collaborated with the leading footwear house, Gaitonde, to develop unique shoes that will be perfect for people suffering from this illness.

Sateesh Jadhav, President, Gaitonde, explained that since these people need shoes with excellent fitting, the footwear will be customized to the sensitivity of feet.

Even a little bit of discomfort may cause injury, which takes long to heal.

Hence, Pedopowergraph, jointly developed by IIT and SMF, will be utilized to identify foot-related disorders in the early stages and support the designing of the accurate footwear for sensitive feet.

Jadhav asserts there will be an enormous market as the SMF study estimates 60 million Indians would have diabetes in 2010.

This footwear range will be priced from Rs350 to Rs3,500 and will be introduced in the market by the year-end.
