Vietnam has outstripped Thailand, Mexico and Indonesia to take up fourth place as the biggest shoe exporting country to the US market, as its market share in 2005 shot up to 4.02 percent (up from 0.86 percent in 2000), Ministry of Trade stated.
Statistics presented convey that US footwear imports turnover from Vietnam fetched $ 717 million in 2005 (a 51.59 percent rise over 2004), five times higher than the figure in 2000.
Out of various shoes categories imported from Vietnam, non-plastic and plastic ones are favorites in the US market (mainly high quality sports and fashion shoes).
Among the top ten non-plastic shoes exporting countries to the US, Vietnam generated highest growth rate in import turnover in 2005, by 50.2 percent (worth $ 554.4 million), constituting 3.63 percent of the entire US market.
Average price of those Vietnamese footwear are currently $10.43 per pair (up 2.02 percent over 2004), that is $ 2.03 higher than the average US import price, but cheaper than similar kind from India ($ 14.75), Brazil ($13.84), Thailand ($ 11.76) and Indonesia ($ 10.88).
Whereas, plastic shoes achieved the highest growth rate in the entire Vietnamese footwear export turnover to the US (59 percent year-on-year rise), it generated $163.61 million, accounting for 8.82 percent in the US's entire footwear import revenues – just behind China (at 77.09 percent).
Average shoes price was $ 14.81 per pair, much more expensive than similar goods from Brazil ($ 2.52), China ($ 5.63) and Indonesia ($ 11.74).
