In a letter to European Commission's Trade Commissioner Peter Mendelson Vietnamese Women Union has urged not to impose anti-dumping duties.

“EU's imposing anti-dumping duty on Vietnamese shoes will threaten seriously life of women workers and their family working in footwear industry. Additionally, it will block EU funded programs on development and social welfare guarantee that are now on good line in Vietnam,” mentioned the letter.

Currently, Vietnam's footwear industry, employs over 500,000 women workers.

According to Vietnamese Competitiveness Management Agency under the Trade Ministry, the anti-dumping duty will hurt Vietnam's leather shoes production and exports, which makes second largest contribution to entire 2005 export turnover of Vietnam, second to crude oil.

Since fourth quarter of 2005, export orders for Vietnamese shoes have witnessed sharp slump as almost all clients await EC's decision on anti-dumping.

Moreover, some Foreign Direct Investment companies have begun mulling shift in their manufacturing operations out of the Vietnam.
