Leather exports need to buckle up

Total exports from Turkey reached US $73.42 billion in 2005 showing a 14.7 percent increase over the figure in 2004. It exported goods worth $64.02 billion in 2004.

In 2005, leather goods exports alone stood at $1.04 billion showing a minor 0.3 over 2004 figure of $1.03 billion.

It is no surprise that leather goods share of the total exports from Turkey has marginally gone down to 1.4 percent as agianst 1.6 percent in the previous year.

The EU -25 market had a share of 38.1 percent of Turkey's leather exports, is a major determinant of the export performance of the sector. The export to the EU-25, as compare to the last year, decreased 1.1 percent.

Second important market for Turkish leather exporters is the former Soviet Republics with a share of 36.7 percent.

In 2005 , Turkey's leather export to the Former Soviet Republics ( Russian Federation & Uzbekistan) also decreased 4.4 percent.

Growing markets for Turkish leather exports from different parts of the world currently are; European Countries ( Bulgaria, Macedonia), OECD Countries (USA, Canada, Switzerland), Countries from the Middle East ( Iraq, Israel, Kuwait) and Asian Countries like China, Taiwan, India, Malaysia.
