Promising leather sector export target up at $7bn

India's leather sector is growing at good pace and Government expects achieving $7 billion worth leather exports in next five year, up from current $2.39 billion, informed Jairam Ramesh, Minister of State for Commerce.

It anticipates generation of one million jobs specially for minority community and scheduled castes, women in particular, he stated.

Government is promoting high quality hide procurement in Bihar and Assam and also hiking imports of raw hide.

It has drawn planning to cut export of finished leather and raise leather goods exports.

Ramesh informed that strategies are being deviced to step up leather exports to the US market as Indian leather goods offer better quality compared to their Chinese counter parts.

Efforts are on to rope in leading leather brands of the world to invest in country's promissing footwear industry.

In Tada region of Tamil Nadu, a leather park is set up and three Taiwanese companies are expected to join the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) at Sriperumbudur in the State.

To provide additional fillip to the leather industry Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has sought a Rs1.5 billion package during his recent visit to the capital - New Delhi, where he met several Government officials beside the UPA Government leaders.
