Calcutta Leather Complex (CLC) at Bantala was specifically set up to relocate city tannaries by the West Bengal Government.

However, despite Supreme Court judgement, about 300 tanneries have not moved in, which prompted the State Government to mull stringent action to regain land allotted to them, earlier.

Also growing interest among investors, has led the State Government to invite them to set up leather units in CLC.

The State Government has reported tardy progress of CLC even after eleven months passage since its formal opening.

Commerce and Industry Secretary, Sabyasachi Sen said, "Despite repeated pleas, most of the tanneries have refused to shift and decided to stay put in the city. We will take action against them."

The state pollution control board would initiate action against city units who have not moved in CLC observing the Supreme Court order, he added.

Almost 75 tanneries have been shifted to CLC, but construction work is yet to begin in most cases, expressed Sen.
