Country's major foreign exchange earning gloves industry's exports dropped 23 percent, according to Chairman Pakistan Gloves Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PGMEA) Dr Shumail Saeed Barlas.
Gloves industry contributes around US $250 million and this decline in export is not good sign for the country's economy, he added.
He identified some barriers like high electricity charges, gas and bank charges as well as non-availability of leather and lack of research and development facilities that hamper the industry growth.
Though this issue has been discussed with the Export Promotion Bureau and Commerce Ministry but concrete results are yet to arrive at.
Leather industry has also alleged that the sector has been ignored in the trade policy 2006-07.
Chairman also said that funds inflow to the industry was also the biggest of hindrance.
He requested Commerce Ministry to provide necessary fund for research and developmental activity and for seamless running of leather products.
Saeed also expressed confidence in Commerce Ministry and was hopeful that favorable decisions will be taken by the powers that be.
