European Union (EU) trade commissioner, Peter Mandelson has offered blanket duty of 10 and 16.5 percent on leather products from Vietnam and China respectively after his first plan to exempt 80 percent of imports was rejected by EU members.

The move is to pacify countries like Italy and Portugal, who are major shoemaking states but countries like UK, Sweden and Demark have shown their preference for the deferred duties.

EU trade officials are meeting today to discuss this proposal and definitive measures, scheduled to last five years should be agreed upon by August, to be in place by October deadline otherwise they would be lapsed.

Meanwhile, various trade bodies like, Federation of the European Sporting Goods Industries have expressed concerns over the uncertainty prevailing in duty implementation.

On the other hand, Chinese companies are pressing the Government for launching an action against EU at World Trade Organization (WTO), saying that they are hardly earning from quota abolition.
