Footwear makers ask for tax relief

Footwear manufacturers are aspiring to capture lucrative shoe market of the EU countries but high taxes on imported raw-material for manufacturing shoes are the biggest hurdle.

Further, Sri Lanka Footwear Manufacturers' Association is passive to sort out this problem.

Ministry of Industrial Development is in the process of establishing 50 manufacturing facilities in European market, informed Kumar Welgama.

Apart form these big factories, a thousand subsidiary companies will be formed to assist the big ones.

Sri Lanka Footwear Manufacturers' Association demanded some tax relief for local shoe industry as import duty on raw material is higher than the imported shoe.
