Leather exports rose 7.98 percent to $2,694.59 million from last year figure of $2,495.37 due to noticeable export growth of leather footwear, leather goods and saddlery sectors in 2005-06, informed M Rafeeque Ahmed, Chairman of Council for Leather Exports (CLE).

Leather garment, finished leather and footwear component have shown negative export growth during 2005-06.

Among all leather products, demand for leather footwear was high which is healthy sign as leather footwear will be accounted for almost 40 percent of total leather exports, Ahmed stated at 89th annul general meeting of All India Skin and Hide Tanners and Merchants Association (AISHTMA).

To flourish leather garment exports, CLE collaborated with National Institute of Design and Indian Leather Garments Association and National Institute of Fashion Technology.
