To bring awareness about local small and medium size footwear manufacturers, the Footwear Association of Sri Lanka has published it first monthly news letter.
K L Chandralal de Silva, Chairman of the Association stated that small footwear manufacturers are always dependent on the assistance of big footwear manufacturers for getting raw material, subcontracts and various types of technical assistance to sustain their industries.
With a view to developing the small industries in a short period, the Association intends to help the 10,000 small scale new industrialists. It further plans to set up 50 large scale footwear manufacturing companies to penetrate the foreign market by providing high quality footwear.
De Silva informed that the local footwear manufacturers association would actively take part in these exercises to grasp foreign markets to make the industry stronger. He hoped that the launch of the News paper would promote the industry.
Chairman further informed that despite receiving ill-treatment by the stakeholders, the industry has withstood the storm and survived. He went on to add that many countries have been developing footwear as their key industry and we intend to follow the same.
Local footwear industrialists have complained that the multinational large scale companies have been dumping their excess products in local market and the immediate Past President of the Association Sarath Pathmalal urged the government totake urgent steps to protect the local industries.
