Government has proposed a negotiation plan so as to decline the import duties on Chinese and Vietnamese footwear and also reduce the time period.
Currently, temporary duties are in force, taxing all leather-shoe imports from China at a maximum 19.4 and from Vietnam at 16.8 percent, over the regular standing tariff of 7.5 percent that are set to expire in October 2006.
New plan suggests that the EU would have to pay 16.5 and 10 percent duties on Chinese and Vietnamese leather imports, respectively, for only two years.
However, if the EU remains undecided by next month on these new duties, the countries will be forced to cut back to original 7.5 percent.
