Following protests over the newly-announced minimum monthly wage for garment workers, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina recently asked workers to join work, accepting the new minimum wage.

A female garment worker was killed and around 10 others injured during clashes this week between protesting workers and law enforcers at Konabari in Gazipur. At least two were killed and 40 injured in clashes between police and garment workers on October 30 in several industrial areas in Ashulia, Savar, and Gazipur.

"I am asking the garment workers to join work under the newly increased wages. They must proceed with their work," she told her party Awami League's executive committee meeting in Dhaka.

"Whenever the time comes, we provide them [garment workers] with all facilities. However, if they choose to take to the streets under someone's influence, then they will be killed by those instigating them. They are the ones who will create a situation where the workers may lose their jobs and have to return to their villages," she was quoted as saying by domestic media outlets.

The Minimum Wage Board for the readymade garments sector on November 8 raised the minimum monthly wage by 56 per cent to Tk 12,500 from Tk 8,000.

RMG workers demand that their minimum wage be increased to Tk 20,390.
