Bangladesh’s ministry of labour and employment recently issued a gazette notification regarding the annual hike in the increment of wages for the domestic readymade garment (RMG) sector.

The government recommended an increase of 9 per cent in the annual increment of the garment industry by adding another 4 per cent to the existing 5 per cent, the notification said.

However, the annual increment of 5 per cent determined by the Minimum Wage Board will continue in its current state, it noted.

Moreover, the 4 per cent additional hike in the annual increment recommended by the committee has been effective since December 1, 2024, which will be paid with the wages payable in January 2025.

Other benefits related to the Bangladesh Labour Act, 2006, will also be relevant along with the wage hike, domestic media outlets reported.

This increment hike will continue until the government revalues it or the Board announces the next minimum wage, the notification added.
