Fiji's TCF Council to set up training facility

The availability of more skilled workers would increase growth prospects of the country's garment industry, and TCF Council is currently working to secure funding for setting up of the training facility, Council president Kaushik Kumar said.

Lack of availability of trained workers is hampering the ability of Fijian companies to cater for high fashion, Kumar said, and added that setting up of the training facility would result in creation of more jobs.

Meanwhile, the Council has urged the government to take steps to ensure that Fiji does not become a dumping place for low quality clothing from other countries.

The Council has suggested that it should be made mandatory for all imported products to have a country of origin label, as it would help overseas tourists in picking Fijian made garments, which the Council seeks to promote.

The garment industry in Fiji mainly works on cut, make and trim (CMT) basis and is a major employer as well as an important source of export revenue for Fiji. (RKS)
