The Addu city council in Maldives and Business Center Corporation (BCC) recently signed an agreement to set up a garment factory in the southern-most city.

The agreement was signed by Addu city mayor Mohamed Shuau and BCC deputy managing director Samih Adam.

The city council will lease land required for the factory.

The factory aims at offering a corporate environment to individuals and small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to conduct garment businesses.

Adam feels the factory will reduce consumers’ reliance on imported clothes and encourage other lower-level commercial activities to upscale to an industrial scale.

The project's design phase is now in effect, and the operational plan and total cost will be determined after the planning phase, he was cited as saying by domestic media outlets.
