Stip garment firms fear losing workers

Garment firms located in Stip, the largest textile and garment production centre in Macedonia, are alarmed at the prospect of losing workers as a textile unit is being built by a foreign investor.

Johnson Controls is likely to hire 1,500 garment sector workers in the garment unit that it proposes to set up in the Stip Economic Zone during this autumn.

Due to better working conditions offered to the workers by the foreign investor, garment firms fear that many workers may leave their current jobs to join the new foreign firm.

The domestic factory owners fear that their most efficient workers might walk off to join the foreign investor, and no proper substitutes would be available to replace them, causing the existing garment units to collapse.
