Nepal Government has urged the management of Surya Nepal, a subsidiary of India-based ITC Ltd to reopen its readymade garment manufacturing unit that was shutdown owing to continued labour strife.

Along with the request, Nepalese Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai has also inquired whether his Government can help in some way so that the operations can be resumed at the closed garment factory.

However, Sanjiv Keshavan, Managing Director of Surya Nepal, has said that the company is not in a position to immediately reopen the factory as it had faced severe loss owing to cancellation of orders placed by European buyers.

Following a series of strikes by workers at the largest garment factory in Nepal, Surya Nepal had last month ceased operations at its Biratnagar unit located in the eastern part of the country, rendering 450 employees jobless and affecting the livelihood of around 2,000 people.
