The US apparel manufacturing sector is the best example of how off-shoring can take away a big chunk of jobs.

In 1990, the US clothing industry employed 902,800 persons. But due to outsourcing of garment manufacturing jobs to other countries, the number of people employed in the US apparel sector declined to 151,800 by 2011, indicating that about 80 percent of jobs disappeared from the industry, according to the US Bureau of Labour statistics.

In 2001, there were 15,479 garment manufacturing units in the US employing 426,027 persons. However, a decade later in 2010, the number of apparel production units fell to 7,855, which together employed 157,587 workers.

At present, only two counties in the US have over 500 clothing manufacturing units – Los Angeles County has 2,509 garment making units and New York County has 803 apparel producing units.
