About 200 people, mostly women over the age of 35, will lose their jobs due to imminent closure of Adidas’ only garment factory in China.

The global sportswear brand established Adidas (Suzhou) Co. Ltd. as a sole proprietorship incorporation at the end of 1997 in Suzhou Industrial Park.

The factory, located at No. 5, Xing Han Street in the industrial park, mainly produces sports apparel for Adidas and its brands.

The garment unit currently employs nearly 200 people, mostly women over the age of 35. However, in about three months time from now, the place would gradually start becoming quieter.

Adidas said it would dismiss the workers employed in the Suzhou unit in batches from October 31 to July 31 next year, when the plant will be completely closed.

As companies like Adidas shift their production units from China to other low cost countries, Chinese factory workers, who lack any other skill, would have to bear the burnt of losing their jobs.
