At the core of the dispute is SACTWU’s demand for R45 increase in weekly wages from September 1, whereas AMSA has proposed R32.50 hike for non-metro B level workers.

However, both SACTWU and AMSA have agreed for a 6.5 percent rise in wages for metro workers. But, here too, they are yet to agree on paying 20 percent less starting wage to entry-level employees.

There are about 500 clothing and textile sector manufacturing companies in South Africa employing around 40,000-50,000.
