War on Want urges British firms to pay living wages

A living wage may be defined as one that enables workers and their dependants to meet their needs for nutritious food and clean water, shelter, clothes, education, health care and transport, as well as allowing for some discretionary spending.

According to recent research by KPMG, one in five workers in the UK – some 4.82 million people – are paid less than a living wage. War on Want says many UK companies with overseas supply chains now have codes of conduct which outline the standards they are committed to uphold, but still fail to ensure a living wage is paid.
