The European Parliament will hold a discussion on the work and safety conditions in readymade garment (RMG) units in Bangladesh.

The discussion will be part of a three-day plenary session of the Parliament, The Daily Star reported.

Parliamentarians are expected to discuss pay structure, health and safety at work, trade union, labour rights and corporate social responsibility in apparel making units in Bangladesh.

The discussion is taking place in the light of the Tazreen fire accident that killed over 110 workers, according to a letter from the European Union received by the Bangladesh Ministry of Commerce.

Bangladesh’s ambassador to Belgium has sent a separate letter to Commerce Ministry urging it to take all required steps to prevent any “negative propaganda” against Bangladesh, according to the Bangladesh daily.

In fiscal 2011-12, Bangladesh’s earnings from garment exports to the EU fetched US$ 11.37 billion, accounting for nearly 60 percent of Bangladesh’s total apparel export earnings of US$ 20.13 billion.
