A new apparel manufacturing factory is all set to begin production during the next few days in the war-ravaged region of Kilinochchi, in Northern Province of Sri Lanka.

This would be the first garment factory to commence operation under the Uthuru Wasanthaya (Northern Spring) programme of the Sri Lankan Government.

Once operational, the unit will employ about 1,500-2,000 men and women, and training programme is already underway, according to the Ministry of Economic Development.

The garment unit in Kilinochchi has been set up by Colombo-based MAS Holdings, as a part of its competition and casual sportswear and performance wear manufacturing arm MAS Active.

The company expects to produce about 100,000 apparel units per month at the new unit.

MAS Holdings is a leading apparel producer in Sri Lanka and is a strategic supplier to several global brands.
