As the Bangladesh Government is planning to include new amendments to the Bangladesh Labour Law 2006 as part of its steps to improve the working conditions in the country’s readymade garment (RMG) factories, international labour organizations and apparels importers are stressing on the importance of revised labour law for the welfare of the workers.

Bangladesh Government has already placed a bill in the Parliament to amend the Bangladesh Labour Law 2006, which is currently being scrutinized by a Parliamentary standing committee.

Speaking to fibre2fashion, director of International Labour Organization (ILO) country office for Bangladesh, Mr. Srinivas Reddy said, “We believe that the workers in Bangladesh do have the right to form trade unions under the existing labour law.”

“Improvements to the legislative provisions relating to freedom of association and collective bargaining rights to simplify the procedures of registration of trade unions would contribute to wider worker representation and increased, higher quality engagement between management and workers at the factory level,” he adds.

Last week, Ambassador William Hanna, head of the EU delegation in Dhaka, expressed optimism that revised labour law would play a significant role in ensuring the welfare of workers and bringing discipline in Bangladesh’s garment industry.

“Our experience in the global world of work has proven that mature industrial relations between independent, democratic, representative employers’ and workers’ organizations are effective in improving working conditions, wages and benefits, as well as resolving the mutual issues of workers and employers to the benefit of both,” says Mr. Reddy.
