Readymade garment (RMG) workers in Bangladesh will receive partial salary of the current month, along with festival bonus by July 26, in view of the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr which falls on July 28, 2014.

This was informed by State Minister for Labour and Employment M Mujibul Haque Chunnu after a meeting with representatives of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers Association (BGMEA), Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers Association (BKMEA) and labour leaders.

The amount to be paid as Eid bonus would be decided by individual owners of garment factories, Mr. Haque said. He added that the labour law says nothing about the bonus.

The Minister said the Government would take steps against garment factories that fail to disburse partial salary and bonus by July 26. He said apparel factory owners have promised to try their best to pay maximum bonus.

With the presence of more than 5,000 garment factories that together employ nearly 4.2 million workers, Bangladesh is currently the second-largest garment exporter in the world, next only to China.

In fiscal year 2013-14 that ended on June 30, Bangladesh’s clothing exports touched US$ 24.491 billion, registering a growth of 13.83 percent year-on-year.
