China-based Shaoxing Mina Textile Company will invest US$ 15 million to set up a textile and garment factory in Ethiopia’s Oromia state.

This was disclosed after Wei Chang Jun, CEO of Mina Textile, met Ethiopian President Mulatu Teshome in Addis Ababa earlier this month, Ethiopian News Agency reported.

The new textile and garment factory will come up in Sebeta town and would employ about 5,000 people when fully operational. The factory will export its products to the US, the EU, Turkey, Thailand and some African countries.

During the meeting, President Teshome said Ethiopian government has been giving special attention to supporting investors in the manufacturing sector. He said the Sebeta railway and the planned expressway connecting the town with Addis Ababa would further spur investment.

Teshome cited favourable investment atmosphere, low labour cost, ready market and advantageous geographical location as some of the reasons for making investment in Ethiopia.

Chang Jun said his company would soon complete the ongoing expansion of a dyeing and printing factory on five hectares of land, as 95 per cent of the necessary equipment has already been imported from South Korea and Italy.

In recent months, several textile and garment companies, including from Bangladesh, India and Italy, have announced setting up of their manufacturing units in Ethiopia. (RKS)
