The hue and cry raised by the textile value-added sector in neighbouring Pakistan, with regards to availability of cotton yarn and the unprecedented hike in yarn prices, is now being echoed in India by the weavers and garment exporters.
According to a garment exporter they are not getting proper supplies of yarn since the past few days. He alleges that textile spinners have started hoarding cotton yarn, in anticipation of a further hike in yarn prices in April.
The hike in yarn price is also irritating the weavers and apparel manufacturers no end. 40s count cotton yarn, which was available for Rs 139 per kilogram is now quoting at Rs 170 per kilogram, a hike of nearly 23 percent.
The textile mill owners argue that cotton prices too have risen by more than 25 percent in the last few months, along with hike in raw material, labour and power costs, which has forced them to increase prices of cotton yarn.
The textile mills have also significantly reduced the payment cycle, which has also affected the value-added sector and these mills, now prefer to either export yarn or deliver to those domestic clients who pay on time.
