As part of a campaign to increase the apparel workforce's minimum salary, the union members had threatened the government to go on a strike, which the labour ministry officials have requested not to do so.
The Ministry's Labour Advisory Committee has cautioned the members of the union to re-consider on their decision to go on a strike, as the same should take place, only after attempts at increasing the minimum salary have failed. More so, the committee would like to address the workforce to apply their rights properly, in accordance to the law.
The request was sent following Chea Mony's, head of the Free Trade Union of workers of the Kingdom of Cambodia (FTUWKC), threaten to go on a strike, if the ministry and an industry association, the Garment Manufacturers Association in Cambodia (GMAC), fail to take a decision on the union requests to increase apparels labourer's current minimum wages from US $50 per month to $70.
Although, members of the union and employers had earlier agreed upon, re-negotiations on the minimum-wage standards in apparel firms, by the year end, Mony informed lat week, that his union's 86,000 labourers could not wait that long.
Before exiting from the union towards the end of the month, Chea Mony averred that waiting for negotiations to happen for a year, was a waste of time and hence, called his probable strike as, the 'last achievement to aid labourers'.
Meanwhile, Mony said that the strike was on cards, until he received a response from the GMAC.
