An appeal has been made to the government, by a Parliamentary regulator, to generously tackle the case against the RMG workers, who allegedly damaged vehicles and had carried out arson attacks in Ashulia on June 21.
However, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labour Ministry on June 24 during its meeting, proposed to initiate legal steps against the workers directly involved in the arson attacks and violence.
Israfil Alam, Chairman of the Committee, informed the media that, the Labour Minister will be shortly conducting talks with the representatives of the RMG units so as to work out the issue of minimum wage, for which they have been protesting.
Government on June 23 lodged complaints against around 60,000 unspecified workers for June 21 aggression, before the Ashulia police.
The protesting workers on June 21 came down on streets while agitating for their demand to hike their minimum wage from Tk 1,662.50 to a minimum of Tk 5,000 per month.
Alam an ex-labour leader and now MP, while speaking to the press at the Parliament's Media Centre mentioned that, they have advised the government to penalise those workers who are found to be directly involved in those arson attacks and ransacking vehicles.
He, while substantiating the recommendation said that, such violent acts are contradictory to the essence of trade unionism and are also a violation against the law.
Though, he added that, in spite of the recommendations, they have pleaded the law-enforcing agencies to adopt a subtle approach towards ensuring that no innocent worker is victimised.
