Country's Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina stated in parliament that, the government is intervening into the matter of garment workers' minimum wage as the factory owners are not offering them wages as per their requirements.
Citing the wages that RMG unit owners pay their workers as insufficient as well as inhuman, she pointed that, the RMG factory owners and NGOs helping the workers could avail of loans from the government's housing funds at 1 percent service charge and construct houses for their workers.
More so, wages that garment workers receive are not sufficient even to fulfill their basic requirements, said the Prime Minister, informing that by July 28, the government will reveal the minimum wage structure for garment workers.
The labour Ministry has been in talks with the garment factory owners to fix an apposite wage structure for their workers, added PM. She further informed that, the government cannot directly intervene into garment workers' wage issues, since garment sector belongs to the private sector.
The RMG unit owners, who earn leaps and bounds in this industry, should offer a part of their profits to their workers, to facilitate them to fulfill the basic requirements of their families, averred the PM.
