Previously troubled northern areas see light of industrialization

The Jaffna Industrial Estate in Achchuveli that has been non-operational since 1986 owing to LTTE terrorist activities in the North region will be re-developed from next month. Indian Government is providing funds totaling to Rs 178 million for the development.

India is granting these funds under its Small Industries Grants Assistance to the Sri Lankan Government as a part of its efforts to revitalize the Achchuveli Industrial Estate, informed Mr. V. Sivagnanasothi, Secretary Traditional Industries and Small Enterprises Development Ministry.

A Steering Committee, comprising representatives from Indian High Commission, Finance Ministry and Traditional Industries and Small Enterprises, has been formed to supervise the development of the project, which will accelerate the local employment opportunities in North. Over 4,000 jobs for the youth are estimated to be generated in the province.

Such a development will be undertaken on a 24 acre land under the government's Northern revival plan. Senior Presidential Advisor, Mr. Basil Rajapaksa has carried out this program unilaterally to speed up the development of the North province. The industrial estate will comprise of the basic infrastructure facilities, such as water supply, roads, electricity, factory and an administrative building.

The site will house around 36 apparel and plastic industries. Moreover, major garments manufactures and exports, such as Brandix and MAS Holdings have expressed interest in starting operations in the estate.
