The administrator of Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA) has granted a rise of around 60 percent in the minimum salary of workers employed in industrial units in eight industrial parks.
It is after 21 years that, the Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority has revised the pay structure and sanctioned a pay hike. The wages were last revised in 1989.
Nonetheless, BEPZA officials informed that the new wage structure will become effective only after November 1. The 5000 – odd garment units in the country will also implement the new wage structure from the same day.
Execution of the new wage structure has been broadly categorized into three categories by the authorities. Under the new wage structure, wages of apprentices have been hiked from Tk 1400 or $20 to Tk 2700 or $39 per month.
The minimum wage for assistant labourers in garment, shoes, garment accessories, leather items, support services, plastic items, toys, hats, caps, tent, and other allied industries has been hiked by around 60 percent to Tk 3,350 or US$ 48. Prior to the hike, the workers since 1989 have been drawing a salary of Tk 2,100 or $30 per month.
