The RMG (readymade garments) Sustainability Council (RSC) in Bangladesh recently recognised 73 RMG production units as compliant and safe.

The factories received letters of recognition after they rectified the non-compliance faults identified during the initial inspections of the council formed by buyers to monitor workplace safety in RMG establishments, according to Bangladesh media reports.

The RSC was set up by three incorporating members representing each of the three constituents from the industry, global fashion brands and global and local trade unions. On June 1, 2020, it inherited the operations, staff, policies and infrastructure of the local Bangladesh Accord office. It is now covering 1,913 factories.

The letter of recognition is not a certification of safety, but a recognition to factories that have addressed all the initial assessment findings, and in doing so, have made great strides towards ensuring safety at the workplace.

RSC chief safety officer George Faller said the RMG industry invested major resources on safety and is now promoting awareness that continual efforts are required to maintain those safety standards to ensure a more competitive business environment.
