ICMR develops battery operated Personal Cooling Garment

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has developed a battery operated Personal Cooling Garment (PCG), with an aim to offer an affordable product, to protect from heat related injuries. The jacket offers cooling for two hours, which can be extended by replacing ice and battery and comprises of a three layered vest of cotton fabric.

The PCG is a jacket-like enclosure system, which creates an interior space of microclimate for auxiliary body cooling and is attached with a small coolant reservoir that can be clipped on the hip belt for easy carrying.

Re-circulation of the coolant is powered by a small submersible, battery operated pump immersed in the coolant reservoir.

Low temperature of the coolant creates a microclimate condition that promotes heat transfer between the wearer’s body and circulating fluid.

The PCG can prove useful for those working in high heat atmospheres in industries like iron and steel foundries, chemical plants, brick kilns, etc. (AR)
