The prizes were funded by RMIT's Sustainability Committee.

Parliamentary Secretary for Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, Yvette D'Ath, who presented the first prize cheque to Ms McDonell at the Sustainable Living Festival event, congratulated the four finalists, RMIT and all students who participated in producing so many innovative ideas.

"It is great to see young people coming up with new ideas and technologies that have the potential to change the way we use resources such as energy and water and help us on our way to a clean energy future," Ms D'Ath said.

"Australia has a history of invention and innovation. Innovation helps drive economic prosperity by creating new industries and new jobs.

"Innovative solutions can also help households and businesses save money and energy and reduce carbon pollution."
