Mr. GonChaudhury said they are working to develop technology to embed small solar cells into the shirt fibre or in its pocket, Times of India reported quoting PTI.

Solar cells varying between 2.5-3 inches in size would be embedded on each shirt to generate around 400 watts of energy, sufficient enough to charge mobile phones, tablets and other digital gadgets.

Detailing the idea, Mr. GonChaudhury said the shirt would have two layers, of which one layer will have two to four small fans working on solar power.

These fans would be smaller than those found in a computer, he added.

According to Mr. GonChaudhury, a person would not be required to wear the shirt all the time, as its exposure to sun even for a predetermined period of time would allow charging of all specified digital devices.

The scientist also discounted the possibilities of any reaction of solar shirt on human body, and added that enhanced research going on in solar energy across the globe is sure to bring down its cost in future.

Mr. GonChaudhury, a teacher at the Bengal Engineering and Science University, has already forwarded his research proposal to the Central Government’s Science and Technology Department.
